about

‘Woebegone’ is the debut full-length album by the Doomcave project. Both emotionally striking and full of ethereal atmospheres, the album ascends from depressive depths to aggressive bursts and back with enormous currents of feeling. Written, recorded and mixed single handedly by its Author, Aiden Vestgaard (Septillion), the album is raw and gritty. It is both a nod to the projects black metal roots, and a monument to Vestgaards love of ‘under-produced’ performances. At its core, ‘Woebegone’ is a melodic black metal piece, but is layered with majestic orchestration similar to bands like Keeps Of Kalessin, with Gojira-esque grooves and progressive song writing parts akin to some of Enslaved’s more recent releases.
‘Woebegone’ is themed on isolation, love, introversion, loneliness, and human aggression. The album wastes no time on fitting to any preconceived formula, aspiring to be a continually changing outflow of ideas and emotions. The writing process spanned the course of a year, and it flows in highs and lows in the same way life and the world changes around us. Its deeply personal, however is intended for each song to be relatable on multiple levels by any individual listener. As such the lyrics are vague as to any specific messages and rely on imagination and personal experience for their interpretation.
Doomcave owes its single-minded direction and unique sound to the extreme isolation of Perth, Western Australia. Unable to find like-minded musicians in his home-town, Vestgaard decided to take things on alone. However, the album features strong performances from other Perth vocalists. Chris Gebauer (Deadspace) brings anguished atmospheric cries and angelic cleans to the track ‘Falling Light’. The track also features a guest guitar solo performance from Vestgaards close friend and fellow solo artist Adrian Ganter (Arizon). Drew Griffiths (Ur Draugr), who also mastered the album, features enormous backing growls and clean vocal harmonies on ‘Messiah’. And finally Brendan Preston (All This Filth) brings fierce machine gun style vocals to ‘The Leech’. Chosen for their recognizable and unique vocal styles and experience, these artists add colourful new dynamics to the ‘Woebegone’ experience.
